idiot mechanics

i bought a truck from a "friend" its an 89 silverado, 350, some lift and 33x12.5 swampers. doesn't run.

he had me and chris come look at it one day, pulled the valve covers and discover that the rockerarm nuts are cranked down. i bought the truck for a song and a dance, started pulling pushrods today and this is what i found.

my "friend" had one of his "mechanic" friends do headgaskets on it for him. as we we're loading it on the trailer the "mechanic" asked me what i thought was wrong with it, i just kinda shrugged and preteneded i didn't know. it was really hard not to laugh when he said that it had a few collapsed lifters and only needed about $20 worth of parts from autozone.

I take it he's never experience adjustable valvetrain. Looks like he just cranked them down like they where pedestal mount.

which is scary, considering the SBC has been adjustable since it's introduction in 1955

not long after high school (ca. 1990 or so?) I had to go fix a buddies truck that did the same thing. they did a cam swap and cranked the rockers all down. luckily the lifters hadn't pumped up yet. I reset the valve lash for them, and it ran good, but I have no clue if they damaged the lifters or pushrods

Don't feel bad. What if it wasn't an easy fix? You bought it hoping it was, and it turned out in your favor. No guilt mang.
