View Full Version : Nitrous questions

First, there were 4 solenoids. 3 of which were easy. Gas, nitrous, and purge. but the fourth is downright HUGE and is not labeled at all. The only thing I can figure is it acts like a remote opener...only you leave the bottle open and just activate that solenoid when you need the juice. Is that correct? If so, what is the duty cycle? How long can that thing remain on without burning up?
Next question... there is a lighted switch in there with a capacitor (16V, 3300uf) going across two of the terminals. Any clues on this one?
The power wire has two items inline. One is a fuse holder, the other is an axial transistor... fairly big sucker too. 25watt, 15 ohm. Why is that there?
I need a blow down kit. Are they pretty much universal to all bottles? What all do I need besides the tube? Is there a safety valve of some sort?
Last, is it better to switch 12v with my arming and purge switches, or should I swicth ground instead?
I have pictures of all the parts listed if anyone needs to see them.

Yes, it sounds like the 4th solenoid is a remote opener of sorts. That is how most companies do it, but the NX one that I have is actually a little servo motor that opens and closes the valve on the bottle. Which is much better because after a while of having 1100+ psi on the solenoids I have heard of them failing. Normally the solenoid would only be energized when you want the bottle open, so it would be on for a couple hours at the most. You might want to contact the manufacturer about this.
How many terminals are on the lighted switch? Normally a capacitor is used to absorb power surges or help in starting motors.
Not sure on the axial transistor.
As far as the blowdown tube, you can just use some -8AN hose and connect it to a bulkhead fitting in the bottom of the spare tire well or where ever you mount the bottle. It does have to be vented outside the car. On the opposite side of the bottle fitting from where the supply line is there should be an adapter that will allow you to connect the blowdown tube. Post a picture of the bottle if you have one.
Most of the wiring schematics that I have seen have both the 12V and the ground switched. The 12V with the arming and activation buttons and the ground with the window switch and fuel pressure safety switch.
As far as the purge you want to switch the 12V, just make sure you get a switch rated for 10A.

Thanks for the info, that helps.
I screwed up in the post above...that was an axial REsistor, not transistor. I do that alot when talking about electronic components for some reason.
On the blow down tube, will I need a fitting to go in place of the burst disc cap to connect the hose to?

Also, here is a list of the pictures of the setup. I set the large solenoid and the filter on the exhaust manifold so you can compare sizes to the regular 'noids.

No you need the burst disc cap, but there should be an adapter that will use the burst disc cap and have -8AN threads on it for you to hook your hose to.

ok, and you think wildside has that adaptor?
I knew the burst disc itself had to stay (been dealing with those things forever in paintball)

I don't know if he would or not. I think he had some Nitrous stuff but I don't remember how much.
Does your current burst disc cap have any threads on it?

I haven't taken it off to see if the cap has internal threads or external. My old co2 tanks all had external threads and the bottle had a female threaded port. I'll have to pull the cap when I get home and check. I'd like to have this functional for Wednesday. Just ordered a new TB plate via next day air. Damn plate was $125...that was an expensive mistake. I tried to loosen the fittings to make sure they had thread sealant. The result:
