I've been thinking the same thing.
Never cared to watch my weight, heavier/stronger was always better in my book. I never watch what I eat, heck I'm eating a Carmel Drumstick right now, but I think I should.
Good news is that I never broke 300lbs, 270's are my normal weight.
As of today I am no longer snacking at work and am planning on packing a lunch instead of hitting supersized fast food meals everyday.
I've been big for a long time and I am planning on it taking me awhile to be less big.

pretty much the same here, even dropping below 250 would be a new thing for me, lol

I found fitday.com to be quite helpful. it's really nothing more then a food journal and calorie counter. set a goal, log all your food intake as well as exercise. it will tell you the caloric limits for each day to reach your goal, and will adjust daily to match your exercise and lifestyle. nice tool kit, especially for free. Those charts I used to post were from there.

I'm also going to cut out 2nd helpings and try to reduce portions. Long term plan is going to be my approach. Goal is to buy a boat by next year and not be the fatass on it!

Eat lots of lean protein, lots of fibrous vegetables and no sugar.
And no carbs (bread, potatoes, pasta, etc.)
Look up the Atkins Diet. It worked for me.. went from 315 to 250 in less than 3 months and have kept most of it off over the past 5 years.
Basically no carbs or sugar for x amount of days (i forgot how many exactly) then you progressively introduce them back into your system. You'll learn that your body burns sugar and carbs first then fat. After you get the hang of it it's easy to follow a basic diet limiting your carb intake.

I went with fitday.com which Quentin first pointed out to us all. There isn't really a set plan of what you can and can't eat. It's more like a puzzle where you pick and choose, and just log all the pieces. I will never buy into a 'diet' that says no x and only x. You might see results but why put yourself through that when some plain common sense and learning about nutrition will do so much more for you in the end? I'm a believer in the calorie count alone to start with. I can't remember what the lowest intake recommendation for males is but I think it's 1500; As a female I wasn't supposed to go under 1200. If you go lower it's counterproductive because your body goes into starvation mode and stores everything you eat. Keep in mind those are only general numbers though. The more active you are, the more fuel you need.
Let me throw a few ideas out there, and take them for what they are worth.
First of all, Diet will overcome twice as much as exercise will if you stick with it.
There is difference between a diet and your diet.
How much you eat is more important than what you eat. Portion control!!!
And as much as you make fun of me, making a menu for the week and shopping for ONLY that stuff will help you not eat junk. If it isnt in the house, you cant eat it. I do my shopping and menu on Sunday and get everything in the house for the week. With no junk food, and only good for me left overs in the fridge, I wont eat junk all week long. Set yourself up to succed, not fail!!!

I find documenting what I'm eating helps me do an evaluation
of what needs to be removed or reduced.
Fitday has some nice tracking charts.

Cut down food portions, eat healthier food (salads, more fruit and veg..etc) don’t eat in between meals, (biscuits, cakes..etc) and get plenty of exercise regularly. Take up swimming or cycling or go the the gym. But truthfully there is no really quick way to lose weight, sorry! By the way, i am not saying that you don’t eat healthily, or that you eat in between meals, but i know that i do.
