A little background.
I spent my summer coaching and playing softball, was in pretty decent
shape. Weighed in around 195.
Hurt my back end of July and spent pretty much the rest of 08 in pain.
I think things really got started on Halloween, pretty much started
eating whatever and when ever I wanted. Enjoyed the holidays to the
fullest.
Weighed in on Jan 4th 218.6!
Had a long talk with the wife about 09 events and what we wanted.
BTW my beautiful wife is a excercise pyhsiologist and PTA.
I accepted a new coaching gig with a local travel team for 09.
A very determined, talented, hardcore 12u girls team.
I take my coaching very seriously and knew I was in no shape to
be effective or respected. I HATE FAT COACHES THAT SWEAT BUDWEISER.
My goal was to get into coaching shape and eliminate my back pain.
I started on Jan 5. My daily routine is this:
Banana/orange and a teaspoon of bee pollen for breakfast followed by
back stretching and strengthening excercises.
Then 20 minutes on the bike for 5 miles. More back stretching.
Iv'e been trying to stick to protein style lunches eggs, turkey, chicken.
Dinner is a meat and nuked potatoes with some raw vegetables.
After dinner my daughter and I have been "gym crashing" the local
schools for a hours basketball workout. Follwed by more back stretching.
At night I moderately snack on raw nuts with dried fruit, or a yogurt.
I have eliminated all (junk food )sugar and caffene, drinking only water or OJ.
I have put away the fryer.
This morning I weighed in at 205. My back is feeling better, my digestion
is better, and my wife tells me my skin tone looks healthier.
As I continue to get stronger I will add more weight training to my routine.
Couple of things:
I haven't been sleeping well, might be stress or related to the diet change.
I fucking hate riding the bike, I love bike riding but this stationary bike bores me to no end.
THats my story thanks for having a forum to tell it in.
Kevin
Bike time for me is a great chance to catch up on TV shows, or my favorite podcast or radio show.
Sounds like you have a great plan Kev, the only thing I would change is breakfast. I am of the opinion you need more calories in the morning then what you are getting, but its all personal perference. And the caffine thing, caffine actually helps your metabolism get running. I bought a jug of caffine powder so I can add it to healthy things instead of drinking a coke or energy drink to get it.
Good luck bro!!!!

Sounds like you have a solid plan and family members that can help you out. Is your bike at home? I use the treadmill at home and while Mark can run while listening to music but I have to have the tv going. We don't have cable or even an antenna in the lower level so I rely on DVDs for entertainment. I really like watching the television show series and I might have to go shopping soon to find some more! I do ride the bike at the gym and while there I listen to music. The bikes that I look overlook the parking lot so I also enjoy watching people scramble to get that closest parking spot. Lol. I try to do 6 miles in 30 minutes when I use the bike but it has several programs that I have not tried yet.
Since I started (November 3rd of 2007) I have had much less back pain than I used to. Even if I skip all the weight machines on a gym day I still try to hit the lower back one to help me in that area.
Have you ever been to fitday.com? Quentin introduced a bunch of us to it and I use it every single day. That way if I want something fried, greasy, or full of sugar I just have to make up for it elsewhere.
Welcome to the fitness forum :).

Thanks guys,
Q,
I have NEVER been a breakfast guy, breakfast meant a mountain dew on the
way to work. I choke down the banana and orange right now. I think you may
be correct on lack of calories in the a.m. As I get used to eating in the morning I'll try to add to it.
I suspect the caffene may be having a less than positive effect on my back,
thats why I eliminated it. The bee pollen is for the increased metabolism.
Do a google on it myself and many friends have had great success using it in past years.
Becca,
We met at a M event some years ago. You saved me from taking out a gas pump with my trailer, I'm forever grateful.
I hooked up the TV in front of the bike this weekend, I watch the history channel (closed caption) while blasting Pantera on the MP3. I guess it helps a
little bit 5.4 in 20 minutes today.
I need to find some new motivational music 20 minutes worth.
Any suggestions?
My bike is in the basement. We have everything bike, bench, lat pull down,
rowing, dips bars, etc. Since my daughter and I have figured out the local
school schedules the only thing we don't have access to is a pool.
I will check out fit day thanks for the suggestion.
Kevin
I will have to look into the bee pollen then too :)

I've pretty much stuck to this routine with the addition of more
fruit in the morning. More oranges, banana's and been eating prunes.
I've also added pretzels as a evening snack.
The good....
Pants and shirts are getting big. I'm hitting 6 miles daily in under 20 minutes
7 in around 23:XX.
People are asking me how much weight I have lost.
The not so good....
I've only lost 1 pound in the past month. I think my body is in hibernation?
The very good...
My daughter Bad D made her school basketball team. Our basketball workouts
increased and intensified . She made starter as a forward and has been so
effective they are looking to make her a center!
She also brought home a straight A report card last week.
We started softball practice a few weeks ago. As the new guy I got off to a
rocky start.
While the fat coaches were standing around in groups talking and pointing.
I was out on the floor getting to know the girls and instructing.
I took over the defense. Last weekend there was a coaches meeting.
The 14U coach wanted to talk about bringing 3 of the 12U players up
to 14U. "Where did these girls come from. Whose system were they in?"
Big smile " They are Mudhens they come from my system"
Instant credibility.

I think each time our body gets used to something it pauses and takes a break. While it can be frustrating when looking at the scale it's still very rewarding to know what you are now capable of. I used distances, speeds, and how tired I feel to gauge how I was doing on the treadmill. Man I hope I can get back into that soon. On weight machines I know how much weight I've lifted in the past and how many times to track improvement.
I'm sure that you being out on the floor with the girls makes them think that much more of you as a coach. Way to go!

Great point. I think we need measurement other than weight to
determine success.
I wouldn't take a 10 pound loss in trade for the ability to spend a couple of
hours WORKING on the court with my kid.

Not to sound wierd but you should have kept measurment of your legs. Those are big muscles and I bet your bike mileage assault is packing a good bit of muscle on. Maybe one of these would show more than a scale could. Keep it up, Kevin, "The Machine", Gresock. :)

Synopsis of the last month:
I started tracking my diet and noticed a lack of veggies, so fresh green
beans and aparagus have become regulars.
I have added reduced fat kettle cooked chips as part of my snack.
About half the fat of regular chips.
FWIW I find the Meijer brand the winner in my taste test.
I have been biking daily 6 miles in about 19:09 7 in under 22:00 and
have added some flexer ball work to strengthen my lower back.
Some very good excercises, not only is my back feeling good it's also
getting very tight and muscular. My recovery time has improved greatly.
3-4 nights a week working out with my daughter (basketball).
These workouts continue to increase in intensity, its not uncommon for
both of us to come home bloodied up. I'm considering playing some tournaments this summer.
Not a single cookie, cake, or piece of candy since the new year.
Lost 2.5-3.0 lbs in the last month. Sure seems like a lot of input for not
much output. I can see the difference in my sides and face.
I hope the warmer weather will kick my body into a higher metabolism or
something.
Good to see spring coming!

As long as you keep building muscle you won't loose a lot of pounds but it's a great trade off, fat for muscle.

When the scale turned static it was nice to see the inches were still moving around. But, I am not good at remembering to do them.

Put in 201 miles last month.
Increased my ball work and lost about 3.5-4 lbs in the past 2 weeks.
My back has been great!
Strange thing is my appetite seems to be decreasing?

I've passed the 30 lbs. lost mark.
Been eating well, ball work and 50 push ups daily.
Been nursing a foot injury so I haven't been riding the bike.
Softball season is in full swing Dana played 5 games in four nights last week.
Including a call up double header with the 14u team. Riverview, Chelsea,
and Grosse Ile. The team has kept me very active and busy.
The girls have progressed and gelled at an incredible rate. We have gone from
new team, to upstart , to contender in a few short weeks.
WE are in the drivers seat. A big week coming up we will be playing a couple
well groomed established teams. We plan to send a big message to everyone that we will need to be dealt with.
BTW got the kid's report card STRAIGHT A's.

Awesome work by you, the daughter, and her team!
Injuries stink and can really throw off the routine. Hope your foot feels better soon. I'm not sure about the appetite thing. I know there is a physical and mental portion to being hungry. I think when we are active and don't give our minds time to sit and think about it we tend to eat less. That's just my theory though. Personally I go through phases where it seems like I am starving and could eat every and anything in front of me. At others, I can't understand why I'm not hungry when it's time to eat. I do try to keep it even though instead of bouncing back and forth from day to day. And on those days when I feel famished I try to drink more water and eat veggies or fruit.

30lbs thats great kevin. and with the working out you must feel great. i've been holding my weight. i've been gaining and losing about 2lbs per week. i've been eating a lot more lately to keep my weight on, i'm alway full (but i'm not eating like i used too)and my body is just burning cals like mad. but i'm sure it's being active and working out. have you tryed any of the 100 cal snacks that meijer carriers now? they have some preety good ones. and it is easy to keep track of your cal intake. keep up the good work.

I'm down to the 6-8 lbs. belly fat that's been around along time.
It's gonna be the toughest but I'm going after it.
Maybe 10?
