11-03-08: I finally decided to do something about not being healthy. The first week I used the treadmill regularly. The second week I started calorie counting.
01-01-09: With the new year came a new gym membership and I am now adding a stationary bike into the mix.
01-15-09: Halfway through January I hit a plateau and have been bouncing between 20-23 pounds lost ever since.
02-01-09: I have finally accepted my lower leg issue as a more serious injury and had to stop using it.
03-09-09: The leg hasn't given me trouble for the past week and now that I'm not sick I plan to start working out more again.
04-01-09: I'm not working out like I used to, but am maintaining quite easily.
November:
-9 pounds; 60.00 treadmill miles
December:
-7 pounds; 76.75 treadmill miles
January:

February:
-3.5 pounds; 0 treadmill miles; 0 bike miles
March:
-4 pounds; 0 treadmill miles; 8 bike miles
April:
+3 pounds; 0 treadmill miles; 10 bike miles

This was a tough week. I was doing well with the scale until Friday rolled around. My company Christmas party was lunch at Red Lobster, then Mark's was a potluck at the Delton Town Hall. Saturday I went up a pound instead of down. I got that one pound back again for Sunday's weigh in but this morning it snuck back on. I'm hoping drinking 32 oz of water between 8 and 10 last night has something to do with it, but I have my work cut out for me if I want to lose another 10 pounds this month.
As far as the treadmill goes I upped the speed yesterday to 4.5mph for 30 minutes and I did the same this morning.

That 4.5 is really moving isnt it? :)
Becca_007
12-22-2008, 10:06 AM
For me I was jogging at even 4.0! 4.5 is pushing it some when I do it for 30 minutes :). I'd still like to be able to complete Program 2 on the treadmill by the end of the month, but I just don't know that my legs can keep up. I think it's 2.2 miles in 30 minutes but it goes up to 6.8 (maybe it's only 5.8). We'll see.

This week started off so well but then I went to my mom's yesterday for football games. Boo. I'm hoping to drop what I put back on yesterday and then some in the next few days. Our last trial gym membership ends on Wednesday so we are going to squeeze in at least 2 if not 3 more visits. While at the gym I've been concentrating on the weight machines since I can't do that at home. Still jogging at 4.5mph for 30 minutes but now I'm trying to walk at 3.0mph afterward for a 15 minute cool down that nets me 3 miles. However, I did not get on the treadmill 2 consecutive days this week. We were so busy :(.
Becca_007
01-01-2009, 05:52 PM
I am now a gym member. It's a longer drive than I would like but I really like their weight machines and the price was right. We had to sign up for one year but the join fee is waived and it's a two-for-one price. So for $50/month ($25 each) Mark and I are now SWAT Fitness Club (http://www.swatfitnessclub.com/) members.
All that said, I am not very happy with my scale readings as of late. The holidays are still upon us and I haven't been as strict with my eating as I should. I haven't really pigged out, but I have taken more than I should at times. That only occurred on two days though so it doesn't completely explain the scale. I have to hope that the other lack of weight loss is due to building muscle. While at the gym I concentrate on the weight machines and have left cardio for the treadmill at home. I do feel that I'm getting stronger (both on the weight machines and in my treadmill endurance) so I tell myself that I'm going in the right direction... but the scale nags at me.

becca, you probably are building muscle, I know that I am heavier then I look, due to muscle(granted, I still at fat, but no where near as big as my weight might lead people to think)
Becca_007

I have always weighed more than what people think. Maybe there is steel in my bones or something. Lol. But, I should weigh less than I do now so I am going to try to refine a few things in my workout/dining routines in an effort to get the scale to move down again.
For instance: They say you should drink .5oz of water for every pound of weight you carry. In the beginning I was doing this but I slacked off over the past several weeks. Frankly, I got tired of peeing all the time!
I was also reading last night that instead of straight consistent speeds on the treadmill, it's better to do intervals of walking/running. It's kind of a pain to switch it back and forth all the time, but I'm going to give it a shot to see how it works. Maybe intersperse the interval workouts with the straight endurance ones.
And if I really am building muscle, at some point it is going to help me burn the fat at a higher rate. I can't wait til that day comes!
Timberwolf
01-02-2009, 11:21 AM
I do something like what you are talking about with the intervals. I warm up at 3.5mph for about 3 or 4 minutes, increase to 4.5mph walking, go about 15 minutes, drop back to 3.5 for 3 minutes, then back to 4.5, etc. I do this usually for about 45-50 minutes, then I'll kick it up to about 5.5-6.0 mph and jog as long as I can (for some reason my calves don't like me to run) before dropping back to a 3.5mph cool down. I found I can go a lot longer doing intervals like that rather than long stretches at a consistent pace.

This was a great week for me. And instead of bouncing back up (on the scale) this morning I stayed at the same number as yesterday.
I am also trying to figure out a new routine. We attended our first group class yesterday and it was a good one. Plus, I've started using the stationary bike to try and get myself ready for biking in the summer. With the introduction of the bike I have been doing less on the treadmill. It's going to take at least a few weeks to find a balance that I like though I think.
Woo Hoo!!! Go Becca:)
What kind of class did you take?

Our gym offers classes by Les Mills. The one we went to was called BodyPump. 60 minutes of lifting weights in a group environment with the instructor up on stage and leading us. The main focus being low weight and lots of repetitions. I used 10lbs for warm up, 20lbs for squats, 10lbs bench work (press and triceps), 10lbs for the first set of biceps, 15lbs for the second round of biceps (that was a mistake as I should have stayed at 10lbs), and 10lbs for lunges. There were also portions where you used just the plates. For the tricep I used 5lb plates, and for the bicep/shoulder I used 2.5lb plates. It really was a great class and it's supposed to burn 600 calories!
I'd like to do that one 3 times a week but might have to settle for only 2 to start. There are some other classes I really want to check out too.

I had yet another battle with the scale this week. In fact, I went down half a pound on Tuesday only to go up two and a half pounds before returning to start weight and then finally back down half a pound again. I also didn't get to the gym as many times as I wanted due to scheduling conflicts. But, I'm still doing it!
Becca_007
01-14-2009, 01:16 PM
While I haven't figured out a real schedule yet here is how my current days are going:
6am: Get up
7am - 8am: Treadmill for 1 hour
Breakfast is usually 200 - 400 calories
Lunch is usually 200 - 400 calories
Dinner is usually 500 - 700 calories
Sometime in the afternoon or evening I fit in another hour of exercise.
I try to keep my calories between 1200 and 1500 for the day. Any lower than 1200 is a waste (from what I've read) because I'd be burning lean muscle instead of fat. And, I also try to drink lots of water. Many days I come up about 15oz short of the recommended daily water intake but I have to wonder if the water in my protein drinks counts.
I have orientation with a a trainer tonight and I will definitely be asking a lot of questions to help me continue with weight loss and build up my strength. It's a freebie with the gym membership so I'm not sure how detailed the meeting will be, but I will try to get the most out of that hour as I can :).

I just took my first 6am class. Youch! I ate a cereal bar before leaving the house, took the 1 hour class, did 30 minutes on the bike, finished off the rest of my first 24oz of water, steamed, showered, dressed, and came to work. I was so hungry by the time I got there. I packed some drink mix, added the water, and those two servings are gone already. Sitting in my chair my legs are still shaking from all those squats and lunges. Woohoo! I am undecided as to whether I will hit the gym tonight or not, but I really want to. This is the first day of the Survivor Competition and I want to get a good head start so I can advance to round two.

It wasn't too bad but it was mostly to introduce us the gym & equipment (which we have been going to for a almost a month now). I did ask a lot of questions though about the best way to train, eat, etc.
I was curious about the cardio workouts because I had been doing more of an endurance thing on the treadmill (jog for 30 minutes) until I read that intervals are better for weight loss. So then I switched to the program which actually covers less miles in 30 minutes but goes up and down in speed. She told us that change is best. Not necessarily the intervals, but making sure you constantly change what you do. Otherwise, your body knows what to expect, it adapts, and you don't get the most from your workout. That makes perfect sense. Yesterday I switched back to endurance. I don't know if I will alternate every day, every week, or what; but I will switch it up more.
When it comes to weights I wanted to know about reps, sets, and amount of weight. Lower weight and higher reps burns more calories for the weight loss while higher weight and lower reps builds muscle. But like cardio, you should change it up :).
I mentioned supplements like protein powder and the stack stuff. She says the powder is good but doesn't like how hard the other stuff is on your heart and body. Kind of what I already thought. And I also asked about the Zero calorie drinks. Pure water is still the best because of all the sweeteners that they put in 'em. As for the zero pop it can still messes with your stomach being that it's carbonated and the kidneys have to work at all those sweeteners.
So we touched on a bit of everything and she gave me some hand outs to read. Ooh. Also discussed BMI and how it doesn't take muscle mass into consideration so it's really a bogus number. SHe answered every question I threw out at her and said to feel free to come back and ask more as they came up.

6 days ago I hit my lowest weight. Since then, I have bounced up and back down within 2 pounds of that low weight and right now I am 1 pound above my lowest weight. I am so bummed that I'm not moving down at all. If this is truly a plateau then I might miss my first goal of -28 pounds by mid-February (I'm 5 pounds away on a good day).
Don't get me wrong. I am very happy with what I have done so far. I just want to reach that first goal I set in the time I set; Then I can move on to the next weight goal. Lol. These next few weeks I am going to be very careful about reaching my target calories and making sure I do at least 1 hour of cardio work each day. Damn goals anyway.
I find that when I am stuck I look at my portion control and usually I will find that I have been lax in it and I am eating too much again.

Well like I already knew, the scale didn't move down for me. In fact, it went up a bit. That isn't too surprising since I took a couple days off this week. My right calf/ankle had been bugging me so I did nothing on Friday. We did go skiing on Saturday and followed that up with another lazy day on Sunday. Then I skipped the treadmill this morning but we will be back to the gym tonight.
I really haven't decided yet if I'm going to try for a big push this week to get the scale moving (in the right direction) again, or if I'm going to just continue as I have been and take a bit of a break. Guess I'll see how I feel after class to decide if y body is ready is ready to be pushed or not.

For the first time in 15 days I finally weighed in at less than my 01/15/09 number; Only .5 pounds less, but it was in the right direction. I have really concentrated on my calorie counting and have to wonder if I'm still too low. This past week has consisted mostly of 1300 per day. It's funny how I feel bad (seems like eating too much) about trying to get up to 1500 calories. But, that is going to be my new plan. It's been 3 months since I decided to change my life and there are still several things I am learning about how to be healthy!

I am stressed. For the last week and a half my lower right leg has been giving me problems. I managed to hit an all time low weight on the 31st but then went back up 2 pounds to finish the week off. I can't do serious cardio work without my leg. I am going to try to stay off it for the next week in hopes that that will help but I am really starting to wonder. I can't even bike anymore (when I tried to stand after riding I couldn't put any weight on it). This really sucks. I am going to make an effort to take this time and really concentrate on arms, and the core. If you know of any cardio workouts you can do while seated or laying down please let me know.

Becca_007
02-02-2009, 09:22 PM
I'm thinking achilles tendon or possibly a high ankle sprain. The achilles seems more likely. I can't completely pinpoint it but it hurts more on the inside and the back of the leg right at the bottom of my calf. It's not something I can press on and say it hurts there. When it really acts up I can not put any weight on the leg at all. I have to stand there like a stork and wait for it to calm down before I can walk again. It's so damn frustrating. It feels better tonight after trying not to use it all day. I didn't even walk out in the shop at work to fill my water bottle. As soon as I got home I propped it up and used the heating pad. We did go to the gym tonight and I wore an ankle brace I have. Whether it be ankle or achilles it helps to support both. I worked on arms and abs, and gimped from machine to machine.

Sorry to say....you need to slow down and get taken care of.
Maybe a good time to concentrate on upper body strengthening.
Becca_007
02-09-2009, 08:27 AM
I have refrained from any and all cardio activity and confined my workouts to the upper body machines only. My leg is back to where it was a week ago. Whew. It still hurts with every step, but the pain isn't as sharp and the last few days I haven't had to deal with the throbbing ache either. Today starts week 2 of staying off of it. Well not staying off it completely, but only walking when absolutely necessary. I don't have to limp anymore which in itself is a great improvement. All that said, I actually managed to lose a bit of weight again last week but am still worried about missing my first goal.
Have you gone to the doctor yet? good job on still losing though:)

I wanted to go in last week but the thought of the bill kept me from calling. Now that it's getting better I will give it another week before making a re-determination. Figure office visit = $150-$200, xrays = $300, and the MRI Mark had to have last year was $3000. The cheapest I could get out would be the office visit and xrays and last week I seriously considered it.
Becca_007
02-16-2009, 09:34 AM
I only managed one cardio workout this week with the leg. This weekend it seemed to hurt more again :(. I worry about getting back into a solid routine and when that will be. I did go to the gym several times but limited the workouts to arms, chest, and back. So I guess it isn't too surprising to see I went up, but only slightly, on the scale.
So by now I was supposed to have reached my goal. I came to within 2 pounds over the last two weeks but just couldn't get there. And, I am finishing 3.5 pounds over where I wanted to be. Still, I have lost 24.5 pounds over the last 3.5 months and that is certainly something. I think I am going to hold off on making any more weight goals for now. I still want to lose more but I will be concentrating more on muscle development and shaping in the upper body, as well as strengthening my abs first.

Something has come up on Sunday (the day I used to measure) for the last 4 weeks. Whether it be being sick, Mark not being able to move, or simply forgetting I haven't been measured. Before that I used to track it once a week. I hope maybe I'll be pleasantly surprised next time I do finally get the tape out :).
I think there is a lot of variation to be considered when measuring but from 11/15/08 to 01/18/09 I lost:
Neck = -.5 inches
Bicep = same
Forearm = same
Chest = -2.75 inches
Waist = -3 inches
Hips = -1.5 inches
Thigh = -3 inches
Calf = -.25 inches
I lost 17.5 pounds and I lost 11 inches (or 14.25 assuming each leg and arm lost the same).
Wish I hadn't dropped the ball on getting new measures every week.

I don't think it really counts since I've been couch-ridden since Wednesday of last week but I'm at an all-time low this morning. Lol. I guess not being able to breathe, losing all your water to snot, and just laying on the couch for 5 days is a good way to lose weight. I expect the scale to go back up again once I'm able to properly hydrate again but for now it is what it is.
Another great thing about non-movement is my leg feels great. We'll see how it does when I try using it though. The downside is I have a lot of catching up to do for my Survivor Challenge. I have a ton of points to cram into the next few days and I need Mark to help me with some of 'em.

Having a month off threw my whole routine out of whack. But, I maintained even without working out and even lost a little. I'm not sure how much more weight I can loss. With the warm weather upon us I decided to invest some money in my mountain bike. I actually dropped it off for a tune-up last weekend, picked it up on Saturday, then put even more money into it. Let's hope it's worth it! I now have a new chain, new rear sprockets, new brakes pads on front and rear, new SPD pedals, and uber fancy biking shoes. After riding for a mere 7-8 miles yesterday my rump is sore. I looked at some shorts but didn't want to drop the coin. I might be headed back today to get them though too.
I was a bit disappointed that I got tired so fast and was really struggling on the trail. However, it was damp, muddy, and pretty hard pedaling. It was a huge relief every time we came to a road crossing and got to hit the pavement. I'm a little torn about what to do today... go to my weight lifting class, or put some more miles (paved miles anyway) on the bike.

Man it's been a while....
We were in Cozumel the whole time. It was strictly a dive trip for us. Had a blast and took tons of pictures and video. When I get home I'll start a new thread and link to the media we've uploaded so far.
As for my health and fitness status it's been stagnant. I still weigh myself everyday and I am much more aware of what I eat but I do eat bad things :). We are having a tough time finding time to get to the gym, the treadmill hasn't been used in months, and we aren't biking as much as we should. All that said, I am easily maintaining. I bounce around a bit but have stayed within the same range which puts me at 25-28lbs below where I started. One of these days I'm going to get going again to see if I can start dropping once more, but I'm very happy being able to maintain with so little effort.

maintaining is is much better then losing weight. with the nice wheater now i'm sure you will be out side more often. so to miss the treadmill or gym can be made up doing yard work etc. congrats.

This past weekend we put miles on the mountain bikes. 6.19 on Saturday on a more technical loop, 34.5 on Sunday riding from Kalamazoo to South Haven, and then 8.82 on Monday on a paved trail. My butt is a little sore but overall not too bad. I do need to make some modifications to my bike so riding doesn't hurt my lower back so much though. The reach from the seat to the handlebars is too far for me.

You can go to a bike shop and get a bike stem with a shorter reach and a taller rise - that will alleviate some of your back pain.

Thought I'd move this into my own thread since it relates to where I am now.
I call bullshit.
The nicer weather opens up too many opportunitys to play outside.
Ask me to throw some motivation at you.
I'm in full kill coach mode. Ask me.
But all those outside activities don't burn as many calories as my treadmill/gym routine I was on in the Fall. Scuba diving might be weight lifting, but it's not cardio. In fact, you want to conserve as much energy and breathe as slowly as possible to do it right. Taking pictures at airshows is even worse! Riding the motorcycle might help to strengthen my abs, but overall it's not a good workout either. And while doing all these things it's a lot more difficult to stay on track nutritionally as well.
I'm not complaining. I'm having a blast and enjoying life. I'm up 5 lbs from my low point but still down 23 from where I started. There's just too much to do for me to put forth that extra effort right now to continue losing weight and really toning up.

Sorry if I came off harsh.
I just went thru a discussion with my players regarding what they were eating on the bench. Bottom line eat for performance.

Nah. Not harsh. It's a tradeoff that I've chosen for the summer for myself is all. I wish I had more time to fit in everything I want to do and if I was really honest I'm sure I could find the time... but I'm just not willing to do it.
