Anyone want to have a little competition in the spirit of getting healthy?

Maybe $20 to get in on it, most improved tone takes all? or maybe split it up somehow?

Anyway...I'd like to get some group involvement... I think it would help motivate us all.

I propose we pick a start date like Dec 1st or something and make a run of 90 days or so. Pics before and after, stats if you're willing to post them, etc

Just tossing out ideas here... but I know I work better when I have some competition or a goal. When I went through medical weight loss my competition was against the nurses that weighed me. I challenged myself to have lost SOMETHING every time I went in. EVERY weigh in I wanted to be lighter than the one before. It was a great motivator.

I think if there's stakes involved we'll be less likely to just say 'screw it' and more likely to stay with it.

Anyone want to play?

What about the crowd that is fit but is looking to add some weight? I'm 5'10" and clock in at 148lbs. Does it go both ways? I'd like to lift more and bulk up to 160 if I can.

like I said, we can set it up for two categories even and split the pot. one for most pounds lost, one for most improved.

thoughts?

(I'd like to get DOWN to 160 myself...)

Sounds like fun. I like the idea of a prize more than cash though. But I have no idea what prize.

I would start at a disadvantage as I seem to have already plateau'd, but I would give it a shot. I am doing it regardless........

I would be interested....I weigh in at 165 right now and could easlily lean out, stay at my same weight, but have much better physique...

lets get some ideas rolling for prizes and a start date!

I like coming here to cheer each other on and all but I don't think I'd participate in a competition. I wouldn't know how on earth you'd make it fair unless you used percentages. The prize is being healthy and feeling better. I have yet to drop any pounds but I just feel better after putting 20 minutes a day towards something other than sitting in front of a computer. That alone is reward enough!

I thought a prize sounded like a better idea too, but then who provides the prize?

as food for thought, here's how cz28 did it. obviously we are a much smaller group, but we could take a little from it and modify as necessary

Original Post 12-26-07:
Since nobody is really taking point on this and the date that everyone said they wanted to start is fast approaching...

On Wednesday January 16th I'll post a password that must be written on a piece of paper that is kept in frame with your "before" shots. You have no more than one week to get me your pictures and $15 via paypal or check (that means if you need to send a check it HAS to be post marked no later than the 23rd of January)

You HAVE to get me your 'before' pictures AND the money by then. If I'm missing your picture, your money will be refunded or your check torn up. If I'm missing your money, your picture will be discarded. I have to be strict on this rule because last time I had all sorts of people promising for weeks and months to get me the money and pictures. Part of the motivation of this competition is that you've already put your money and photo on the line. It's not fair to take a before photo of yourself and then decide to submit your photo and money only once you've decided to stick with it and seen some good results.

I'll leave it up to you as to whether you'd like me to post your before pictures immediately or you want me to wait until after the challenge is over. Whichever you think will motivate you better.

All before and after pictures will be posted in this very same post (edited as necessary). Please don't post your own pictures later on down the thread. This way we can be sure that only those people who are paying to join the actual competition are included for judgment. Please no "I want to compete but don't want to pay the entry fee" posts.

14 weeks later, April 23rd there will another password given and you have another week to get your after shots taken and submitted to me by April 30th.

As far as I understand it there will be two categories. One for weight loss, and one for muscle building.
The judgment will be based on most improvement. So if you are a stick, like me, then don't worry about the guys who are already in shape beating you because they're already in better shape than you can get in 14 weeks. The name of the game is improvement.

Public poll voting will be done starting on April 30th and the poll will close after a week. It'll be open to all CZ28.com members, though votes from members registered after November of 2007 will not count as legit votes (to prevent people from registering alternate IDs and voting twice for themselves or their favorite). Also please be fair and don't tell your friends with registered user IDs to come vote for you. The competition loses its fun and competitiveness when the voting just comes down to popularity and campaigning for votes. Let the photos speak for themselves. In fact I say if it's discovered that you've been campaigning for votes on this site or on other sites, you're disqualified.

Prizes will be based on the number of competitors in each category. If we get 10 competitors in muscle building and 5 in weight loss then the muscle building prize will be $150 (minus applicable pay pal fees) and the weight loss prize will be $75.

For those not comfortable giving your money to me to hold, please rest assured in the fact that I held it last competition and there were no issues with quick prize payout, and at least 20 members here know me and know where I live.

Rules/Reminders:
Your pictures MUST have the password visible in each shot - that won't be given until the 16th of January.
I don't recommend you submit pictures wearing a shirt but if you insist, be aware that your 'after' pictures will have to be wearing a similar style shirt as well.
When submitting your payment and pictures be sure to specify your CZ28.com screen name as well as the category you want to join (weight loss or muscle building)

Let's do it!! We should try to meet at someone's place to take the "before" and "after" pictures to ensure everyone is using a picture from the same time period.

The only question is do we want to do this asap? or do we want to start this after the new year? The Holiday season is a busy time for most....might be easier to wait and make the meeting for like Saturday January 10th?

This way, if you want to participate you have to come to the meeting, you have to get your Before picture taken, and you have to have your money....or you don't get to compete.

Then we set a date approximately 3 months later??? and meet at the same place and get our after pictures taken....Then the rest of the board members can vote on most improved in each category??

What do ya think? any other suggestions?

Let's do it!! We should try to meet at someone's place to take the "before" and "after" pictures to ensure everyone is using a picture from the same time period.

that could be covered with the secret password idea, given out the day before the contest starts. you'd take the picture holding a sign with the secret word on it.

The only question is do we want to do this asap? or do we want to start this after the new year? The Holiday season is a busy time for most....might be easier to wait and make the meeting for like Saturday January 10th?
I thought about this, and that's why I suggested Dec 1st. It's past thanksgiving, and allows you to get a good start on the diet and exercise plan before christmas kicks in...and throws a variable in there to see if you can stick to the program. Consider it a challenge! :)

This way, if you want to participate you have to come to the meeting, you have to get your Before picture taken, and you have to have your money....or you don't get to compete.

Not opposed to this idea, but it might be tough getting everyone together. Perhaps a holiday party?

Then we set a date approximately 3 months later??? and meet at the same place and get our after pictures taken....Then the rest of the board members can vote on most improved in each category??

I didn't think of X-mas/New Years as being a challenge, but I like the idea. There's always insane challenges on those "fit shows" so why not!

Dec. 1 would put me out as my left hip gets replaced on Dec. 10. It's hard to loose weight when you can stand up.

hope not. it's an improvement. This doesn't have to just be pounds lost... just most improved. or split it like cz28 did. half the pot for weight loss, the other for muscle improvement.

The fitness thing sounds like a great idea. I'll keep reading the posts. How about posting measurements? Then you could see inches lost, sometimes it's not always about the weight lost. Just saying, guys lose easier then women is all.

The more I think about it, the more I would like to see a buy in rather than just a prize offered (by somebody). When you have something at stake, you are more motivated to see it through.

Also, our instructor was talking today about some study, and it showed that when people are in competition or have to report to someone regarding their progress they are more likely to complete their goals.

It was something like if you think of the goals you have a 5% success rate, if you write them down it's like 10%, if you tell someone, it goes to 20%, etc... when you have to report to someone it goes up to like 95%

That follows along with what I was saying before about my success at medical weight loss clinic. I was in competition with myself, and also reporting to them. Worked great for me, so i tend to believe his stats

December is upon us. I plan on starting Monday morning (dec 1st).

Anyone else in?

Even if we don't do a prize, how about just getting a few of us doing this for moral support if nothing else.

If you wanna play along, take a pic of yourself with a copy of the newspaper on the day you start. Makes it easy to determine your start date that way.

I don't care if it's contest, but it would be cool as a group to see how much tonnage we can lose (and therefore how much faster collectively we'd be if we were still a car club lol)

Becca_007

I'll tell you how much I lose, but I'm not sure I want an image to start and I don't get the paper! It definitely helps to have others to talk to when you hit plateaus or are just plain too tired/sore to do your workout.

starting out this year at a rotund 268 pounds. If I stay true to last year, I should be around 238 by summer.

This is on a industrial scale here too, and I will use the same one to weight out in the end.

What are the time constrants for this by the way?

Timberwolf
12-01-2008, 05:16 PM
if it's not a competition, then post up all you like with updates... should get more support that way. but I do like a little friendly competition, so let's see how we stand on say.. Feb 1st?

I'm coming from an obese 211.5 as of this morning. Goal before maintenance is 160. But that assumes I don't build much muscle. So to average it out, I am going to shoot for about 12% body fat or less

YNOVATE

I'm starting out at 168lbs and i'm between 5'9" and 5'10" I don't plan on losing any weight, but rather tone up and stay right around 170.

I didn't take pics of myself yet, but will do so within the next couple days.

i will give this a go in a couple of weeks when i go on a three week break from school. I've been wanting to do something like this for a while.

All i really need to do is just eat right and lift weights the whole time right? cardio. wouldn't do anything for me but burn off the calories and whatnots that i need to gain weight right. i don't really know what proper steps i need to take for this to happen. Should i use a supplement (go to GNC and get something)?

Tomorrow makes it the first full week... want to post updates in the morning?

Okay-here is the update...at the end of the week, changing what I eat and how often and going to the gym 5 days out of 7 (and only drinking once)-I lost 4 lbs.

Having someone to help plan (and cook) has been helpful. I do miss my old unhealthy routine of losing weight (stop eating and smoke more).

I wish I was less tired. I really am not seeing any energy boost. I imagine some things will have to be tweaked. I am bored 90% of the time at the gym and that makes me not want to go.

Anywhooo...I haven't given up yet, so I guess that is something.lol

Timberwolf
12-08-2008, 12:23 PM
My update:

After 1 week, I have put in 14 miles on the treadmill (got myself down to 300 calories in 20 minutes), cut my calorie intake by a million percent (roughly) and lost about 4.5lbs to 207 (from 211.5).

I was actually down a total of 6lbs yesteday, but for some reason all the late day water I drank stayed with me, and some of it came back. Probably didn't help eating a soft pretzel for lunch yesterday and half a fifth of jager the night before! lol I am sure it will come back off though, and I am happy with the progress so far

i'd like to play but it would be pretty worthless until the holidays are over. i have to get up the ambition to go all the way down to the gym in my rec room too :D. i turn another anniversary of my 21st birthday this week. by next year (the BIG one) i want to be able to bench my weight which means i'll either have to get stronger or lose a bunch of weight. meeting that either way or both ways makes that a pretty good goal.

Weighed in Friday at 148. Mind you this was after recovering all of Thursday after putting myself into a hypoglycemic shock...only had a sandwich on Wednesday and went to the bar that night. Hoping to be 156 by the weekend.

It is Monday and time to post up progress...yippee.

After a weekend of not logging what I did or ate (and did I mention ALOT of drinking?) the scale didn't look too awful this morning.

I am down another 3.5 lbs this week. Total of 7.5 lost in two weeks. (only 2.5 to go to reach my first goal...then there is the 2nd goal, but I don't like to get ahead of myself.lol)

I worked out at the gym 4 days last week, then my kids had some health issues so I was at home or shopping (running my butt off).

I have tried to take the ECA stack like Mike and found out that I really only need to take half the dose he does (talk about being jittery!!) but I do like not being as tired as normal!

Q
12-15-2008, 08:22 AM
See, I dont like the ECA stack stuff. Anything with Ephedrine is not my cup of tea. I dont need any heart issues like tackeycardia. ;)

But if it works for you, good luck. I will be interested to see if it stays gone when you cycle off the ECA stuff, or if your metabolism comes raging back and kicks your ass.

And for the record, I suck today. I skipped the gym totally, and I missed my grocery shopping last night too. Instead we put in a new floor and repainted two rooms all day yesterday. So I still got a work out, and i am still sore today.

Modsled
12-15-2008, 09:02 AM
Ephedrine is scary stuff

Timberwolf
12-15-2008, 09:18 AM
ECA only works for about 2-3 weeks, as your body will get used to it. Ephedrine isn't scary in normal doses. That's why it is still legal and used for asthma treatment. It just can't be sold as a weight loss supplement because people overdose it especially as the effect wears off, and that's when you have problems. Ephedrine doesn't create heart problems, but if you already have a heart condition, it's recommended you don't use it.
It really elevated Heather's heart rate, but then she's got a normal rate around 65-80. Mine it made no difference, but mine is normally around 95-110. Even pushing hard on the treadmill it stayed about the same (165) as it does when I don't take it)

Anyway, my weigh in today has me right along with Heather... down 7.5lbs. We had her company Christmas party saturday night and ate and drank like it was going out of style, then Alli's birthday yesterday where pepperoni pizza, cake and ice cream came into play. I missed the gym 4 days last week :(

I am hoping by next week this time to be down a full 10lbs at least. My goal is for April 1st to be at 160... that's a little less than 3lbs a week. So far I am on track, hopefully it keeps up.

Becca_007
12-15-2008, 09:46 AM
This week was a good one for me. I dropped 2.5 pounds. In addition to the morning treadmill time I did a workout DVD each evening and that seemed to get me over the hump. However, on Saturday I slacked off and skipped the evening video and the last three days the scale has said the same thing.

I am now at the same weight I was in May of 2004. Woohoo! Total loss is currently 13 pounds. It's great having other people to cheer you on and who are going through the same things. Makes it so much easier to keep going forward. Also, I just feel better. So if I'm really feeling crappy I try to push myself into that workout because I know I'll feel better after.
