View Full Version : Working out and eating right
Today is day two in my new regime. I have completely changed my eating habits, and started going to the gym on my lunch hour.
Gotta say, I am a little sore, not to bad though. But I really do feel better so far. Being I havent had a cigarette in over 6 months, I can actually run again.
Anyone on the fence on doing something like this, I encourage you to go for it. Hell, post up and we can help each other. Djcobol is on the same eating plan I am on, and he is even talking about going to the gym.
Be kinda cool to see how much we can lose as a group. Or not
As soon as I get my health back I'm going to start working out, I need it.
Its funny, I havent been to a gym in at least 15 years, and I am doing pretty good. Yesterday biked 2 miles and ran one. Today ran one mile, and did a full upper body workout.
Tomorrow I do chest, abs, and another 20 minutes on the bike.
Wow you're doing pretty good. I used to rollerblade just about every day then go home and do some weight lifting, but I got busy with other things and after awhile stopped doing anyhting. Lately it's been buggin me, so I hope to be able to get back on the blades by the end of the week.
If I wasnt doing this on my lunch hour, I dont think i would have time to do it either. Its alot like when I quit smoking. I have to WILL myself to do this, even if I dont want to.
I hear ya man, usually I'm just way too tired to want to work out. I'll pick up the weights and after a minute I'm ready to pass out. I'm hoping by next month things will get caught up at work and home so I can start doing more. Hell I haven't even had time to work on my Camaro in months.

Its amazing that it does actually give you more energy. I have been going to the gym for a bout a year now and I have lost about 20 lbs. and I have never felt better.

Wish I could afford to eat right :( Lately its been microwavable food, kool-aid, and the occasional cheap beer with a steak if I can get one for next to nothing from work. I haven't been able to stay up more than 14 hours in the past week...might need to get some vitamins.

For me, I picked up a road cycle and have been trying to ride as much as possible. The biggest ones for me were quitting smoking and kicking all non-diet pop. I used to be a Mountain Dew fiend. Gave up Dew, Coke (cola that is) and smoking cold turkey. Since switching to diet pop only and drinking more water I've dropped 30 pounds in 2 1/2 months. :jiggy:

Now that the golf season is over I'm getting back into working out. I'm hoping to lean up and drop 20 pounds by the first of the year.
Oh, eat lots of protein everyday to the tune of 1.5-2 grams per pound of body weight this will give your muscles enough fuel to grow while still being able to drop weight.

about 4 years ago I force my self to drink diet. Lost 20 pounds in about 3 weeks with no other changes. Then I started running . I slowly worked my way up to a 5k distance. Ran all last summer kicking my ass with the help of my younger (running freek) cousin . Spent this summer running 4 miles every other day. I am now down to 180 from 215 . Went from a 38 pants size down to a 32 . Man I feel good.
Ive knocked down my meal portions so I cant pig out any more.
What do you guys consider eating healthy? Like what kind of foods.
SWEET MOTHER OF GOD.......WHO smashed my arms with hammers last night. :wow:
Today is definetly a lower body workout day!!!
Mike, healthy to me is lots of veggies, lots of turkey in place of ground beef. Lean beef, lean pork are ok. Lots of chicken. Smaller portions, and making sure each time I eat that it is what my body wants, not just what I want.
For example, I will tell you what I ate yesterday.
Breakfast was a single portion of creame of wheat with skim milk on top.
Mid Morning snack was 1 cup cottage cheese and a apple
Lunch was a protein shake (only because I work out after lunch do to logistics)
Mid Afternoon snack is my actual lunch. Had 2 chicken enchalidas left over from dinner the night before.
Dinner was turkey meatloaf, and green beans
Desert was a vanilla protien shake.
Thats what I ate. I was full all day long, and I was lucky if I broke out of a 2500 calory intake. Then figure in the workout at the gym I had too.
If you guys are serious, check out www.fitday.com Its a free service that lets you track what you do daily. It lets me see what I burn, what I take in, and keeps records of it for me so I can go back and look whenever I want to.

thanks for the link
No problem. You can actually make it public if you wanted to share with people as you go along. Which is pretty cool in itself. I have been filling it out each day, so a pretty close guess per that site says I had almost 2300 calories yesterday. Sounds like not enough, but like I said, I was full and content all day long, and I had the energy I needed all day long. So its all good IMO.

Congrats Q! I didn't know you quit smoking, i sure wish i could. :(
As far as working out/eating healthy you have to be willing to change your lifestyle. I lost a lot of weigh a few years back and have since went back to some of my bad habits, but i still rarely drink anything with sugar in it and almost always pass on fries and all the bad shit. But when you do decide to fall off track with your eating habits just do it for a whole day. If you're going to have a piece of cake or a donut you might as well just have a pop or whatever too and start the next day fresh.
Its hard for me to keep away from drive thru's as i'm in my truck for 4-6 hours a day but i do the best i can with whats available and i'm now back to losing a few pounds. I'm down 8 #'s from last week just drinking mostly water instead of pop or juice. The problem i have is i get burned out on diet pop. It only tastes good to me for so long then i just get sick of it. I've taken a liking to flavored water lately. I like the Aquafina Cleanse/Replenish. Its got niacin and vitamin b in it, no carbs or sugar and no calories.
Keep up the good work and best of luck to ya! :)

Do it, just remember these few rules.
Always take your pills on time, EVERY day....dont miss.
Smoke all you want for the first few weeks. Then you have to actually try to stop. When you crack, you will smoke but not feel it. I swear, its strange, but you wont get the buzz on that first cigarette like you do when you go without now. Thats when you know the drug is working, then you just have to have the will power to put them down. You wont be hooked on the nicotine then, only the physcial habit.

Mike have you tried the Pepsi Jazz pops? To me they taste great for a diet soda. There's 3 different flavors.
Start of the second week, just got back from the gym. I stayed true to my plan, eat good all weekend, and into today.
My god I hate to admit this, because I hate being proven wrong, but The Dude was right all along. I feel better then I have in a very long time, both physically and mentally. I have a skip in my step, and I am actually smiling while answering the phone.....no lie. So SCREW YOU DUDE for being right, but I gotta give credit where credit is due.

I've cut down on the sugar (limited koolaid and pop, heavy on the water) and I don't feel quite so worn out all the time. I think my body relied too much on caffine :dunno: This past Saturday I got up at 9am and kept on going till 1am, haven't had a full day like that in a while.
I did hit up the parents for some food aka "Pantry Shopping". I have enough good stuff to last a couple weeks. 4lb of chicken breasts, homemade applesauce, carrots, potatoes, pastas w/ sauce, pork back ribs, lean chuck roast, and a bag of apples.
Hey, its 73* here in Kzoo, perfect weather to wash the truck then head out for a jog.

Good for you Q. Sounds like this is helping you out of your depression you spoke of.
Personally Ive been slackin for about a month now and its time to get back on the horse. I switched to a second shift at work so Im trying to get up in the morning a get stuff done that I normally do at night after work.
For those of you that like your carbonated drinks (soda) Ive recently learned
one of the major reasons it not good for us .
Your body has a certain PH level it needs to work at.
Ph level is rated on a # scale 0-14. 0-6.9 is acid 7-14 is alkaline.
You body needs to operate in the 7.36-7.44.
Pop is 2 OJ is 3 and tap water is 4.5
So if you go ripping up a 6 pack a day of soda your making you body to acidic and it will drag you down and cause fatigue. IF you go crazy drinking water non stop all day you body cant obsorb nutrients properly.
I guess if you drink 3 pops and 3 waters you might be okay but dont hold me to it.
http://vitacorp.icthus.net/articles/ph_levels.shtml
I havent had a soda in over a week, and I like it that way. Just garbage in a can.....plus it rots your teeth badly!
You guys might get sick of seeing me bump this, but as I achieve things this is a wonderful way to track them.
Today, 20 minute workout.....Bike set to level 8, went 5 miles.
Not bad considering I was at under 2 miles last week. I am shooting for 10 miles in 20 minutes....

I believe pop and OJ are acidic, but not that much. And tap water should be just about exactly 7, or something is seriously wrong.

Exactly what kind of food plan are you guys going by? I think Mark and I are finally going to commit to something. We've been ready a long time for this. We just need to find out which way to go.
Honestly, nothing special. Just cut the shit out of your diet. No more soda, candy, chips and shit like that. Eat good, and cook it yourself. Have fun with it. Make some lemon pepper chicken, with rice and broccoli, or maybe a good beef stew. Just use LEAN meats, and low fat dairy stuffs. The biggest thing is portion control. Your protien should be the size of your hand closed, the carb should be able to fit into your palm. Easy as that. Just remember your eating to not be hungry, not to feel full and bloated. After that, just exercise. Walk, run, jog, lift weights, ride a bike, have sex extra long. Its all exercise. Just get off your butt and away from the desk. Thats what I have done, and I will weight in today at the gym to see what I have done over the weekend. I give myself Saturday as a free day, I can eat ANYTHING. But the other days I am on the straight and narrow. Also, remember for each pound of bodyweight, you should be getting a gram of Protien daily. Thats where protien shakes help alot. And instead of eating 3 times a day, I eat every three hours, just once again portion control is in effect.

While we do have soda the only forms are Zero. I drink a can a day just for something different than water. Think we currently have Sprite, Coke, and Cherry Coke. For me that change wasn't difficult because i drank Diet to begin with. I only drank regular because it was easier than buying two kinds. Now Mark will drink the Zero Cherry Coke so there is one plus. My big drink downfall is Rockstar. Damn I love the taste of that stuff. It's something that shouldn't be too hard to let go of though (other than Jager-Bombs!). I have also returned to drinking plain water instead of the sports drink mixes. The citric acid in gatorade, powerade, and the like are horrible on your teeth. I takes 2 hours after the last swig for saliva to cleanse your mouth of the acid contained in drinks of that type (fun fact I learned from my dentist earlier this year).
As for the other stuff; that's where we have the problem. When you want to snack it's a lot easier to grab something high in fat and calories then to find something that's good for you. I guess the big thing there is making it so you don't have the want to snack. We do use lean burger and about a year ago we started using 1/2 a pound instead of a whole pound for dinner (chili, hamburger helper, tacos). We also have chicken and fish just as often as beef/burger. The portions are a different story though; especially when it comes to that pile of mashed potatoes and gravy. Fish usually gets rice as a side though. I can't say we eat that many vegetables. In fact, they are never part of my dinner plans. Occasionally we will have raw celery and carrots as a side. That sounds like a good area to work on.
Ooh. Protein, huh? I have never really paid attention to labels and counting. That sounds like a ton of protein though. Is it really one gram per pound you do weigh or is it what you should weigh?
And exercise. We've been chatting all morning trying to find a way to exercise that we can stick with. I'm interested in trying something more structured that I have to pay for with the thought that I would then have to do it. But, I don't really have the money and the typical gym scene doesn't interest me. I don't know what kind of fees are associated with martial arts classes, where to take them, or if that would keep me interested either.
Thanks for the input. I'll try to apply it to our plan!
Water is a great start, when I get hungry I down a bottle of water.
As for snacks, if you start eating 6 small meals, your metabolism will speed up, and you will find that when you are wanting a snack, its time for a meal anyway.
You need more vegetables, period. The more you eat the better. They make great snacks, and once again your not eating to feel full, your eating to not be hungry :)
And yes, one gram per pound is the accepted norm. Not everyone can do that, but that is the idea. But when you have a protien shake that carries 46 grams per 16 oz, that helps. Espically when i usually drink two of them a day. Dont use water, use skim milk. I dont care what the label says, dont use water. Its the devil in protien powder. And dont be afraid to add things, like frozen fruit in a blender, or instant coffee or Chai tea concentrate. They make the shakes better IMO, and it mixes it up instead of the same old protien shake. Even The Dude liked the instant coffee added. Plus its a nice pick me up.
Excercise is so easy to find if you look for it. Walking, running or biking are great activities that you can do at home or with Mark. Go to the mall instead of shopping online. Need milk, walk to the store. While its true that weights and resistence training will have the largest impact on weight loss, just normal daily routines like walking can be a big help. Instead of watching that rerun of the Price is Right, go for a walk. But even if you cant do that, at least start with diet.
I wont lie and say this is all my great idea, its not. But I have been reading alot about things lately, and applying them to things I already knew. And I have been running out of a book that helps me alot too called Eating For Life. Check it out on Amazon. It is really good in what it teaches.
I wont lie and say its all easy and fun. There are days I dont feel like doing shit, like today I didnt feel like going to the gym. But I did, and I worked the hell out of my back today. And there are days when I look at the turkey sandwich I have for lunch and go "bullshit, I want a whopper" But I have yet to give in to it. Its all about commitment, and will power. If you want it bad enough, then go get it. Nobody is going to be able to do it for you. And remember, you didnt turn into the person you are today overnight. Dont expect to change overnight either. There is nothing more disappointing then stepping on the scale and seeing next to no results. But if you feel better and you have more muscle, those ARE results you tend to overlook.
Good luck Becca

Well it isn't much, but I walked a mile @ 3.5mph on the treadmill last night. I lasted a month last time I tired to 'be more active'. Tonight I'll either do the treadmill again or possibly go out geocaching.

Well I noticed you had slimmed up some when I chated with you at Gutlass work .
Well that was a fun thread to read as we have decided in this house to start becoming healthier folks. I believe the date was set last night for Feb 1st to begin dieting. With the schedules we keep I am not sure we will be able to work out together (or at all) but I am hoping the healthier eating habits will get us going in the right direction.
I have always had a less than healthy diet regime-quit eating and smoke more. However, I finally quit smoking (cold turkey after 20 yrs) on New Years and have been doing really well. I thought it would be a lot harder and that I would be um...a lot less nice, but I think I have maintained sanity. I really believe that moving into the new house has helped-I never got into a routine of smoking here (well going outside to smoke-haven't smoked in the house for eons...I have kids ya know). I can't say I don't miss it at times...especially at the bar-I have no idea what to do with my hands:)
So, is anyone else still doing the dieting thing on here? Were you able to keep up progress through the holidays?

We have had some false starts and are going to go at it again starting this evening. Our food intake we have worked on for quite some time, but getting the exercise routine going is the hard part for us. Anyway, tonight the treadmill will be fired up, and maybe even the weights moved around on the bench too. Another option would be a workout DVD I have. If Mark is on the treadmill I just do that instead. At any rate... something is going to be done tonight other than staring at televisions and monitors.
Maybe you two need to find something that allows you to play computer games and exercise at the same time:)

Call killerjello and see if he wants to play DDR!
Still following the same plan. Last time I checked I am maintaining 265. I go to the gym at least 3 nights a week, and I am very rigid in my diet. The biggest thing you all need to do is get past this idea that you are on a diet. You are NOT on a diet, you are changing the way you live and eat, permanently. This isnt something you can do and then quit and expect the weight to stay gone. Its life changing, or its failure.
Good luck!

Good point about it being a lifestyle change. In an attempt to maintain a postive outlook I will not complain about missing my current junk food diet.lol Instead I will look forward to not having to buy new (larger) clothing and living a longer life. :D
Congrats on keeping on track!
At the same time, you NEED to have a day where you can have your treats. You cant not allow yourself some vice. I take one day a week, Saturday and eat what I want. And I have found that as I have progressed in this change in eating, that I want less junk the longer I eat well.
I use to eat till I felt like shit, now I find that a few treats on Saturday is good enough for me. You eat to provide your body with fuel, not to feel full. If you are eating to the point you feel full, you ate too much.

I only had one 'workout' last week and then the whole thing was blocked from my mind... again. However, this morning I woke up at 5:00am. Now the alarm doesn't go off until 6:45am. I got up, went to the bathroom, laid back in bed and just couldn't fall asleep. Instead of wasting all the extra time on the puter I actually went downstairs and walked a mile on the treadmill. A mile isn't much and it only took 20 minutes (3mph) but it's more than the nothing I could have done. This morning I feel a lot better than my typical mornings. I'm not saying that meager 20 minutes made a huge difference, but me making the decision to do something better in that 20 minutes has me just feeling a better about myself. I will have to see how the day goes and perhaps just start setting the alarm a bit earlier. I always wondered if exercise in the morning would be the best time for me. I don't leave my desk during lunch, and by the time I get home and then eat... I don't like doing anything with food in my stomach. I hope I stumbled onto something this morning.
Good for you!!!! I used to be a morning exercise person, but my wake up time lately has been crazy. (my daughter has been up and down for the last few weeks from like midnight on...) I suppose I should just get up with her at 3 or 4 or 5 and start my day, but I don't wanna!!!
We started our new way of eating (notice I didn't say diet) finally yesterday. The original plan was to start Friday, but our schedule didn't allow us to get groceries until Sunday night (ya know b/c we had to go to G.R. and see Kid Rock). However, we have not started any work out schedule...so that will have to be the next step:)
*btw-I am hungry!!! *sigh*

Things slowed down for about a month with the doctor telling me I had a lung virus, but yesterday it was business as usual. 7 miles on the bike, a full 50 minute workout on the weights, and then another 4.5 miles on the bike. Today I go do it again. I am right around 30 pounds lost right now.
Anyone else stick with it? How you doing?

nope-we suck.lol we keep talking about it. we buy decent food and eat it too-but the junk food still calls. I think I have put on weight since we started eating healthier. *sigh*
We did put up a heavy bag thingy (which has been used 1 time so far by me). I had high hopes that when the weather got a bit warmer I would be motivated, especially since I take the kiddos outdoors often (walks, etc). Then we get this shitty weather-can you believe this f***ing snow? Grrrr...
Anyway-good job Q!!! Glad someone is doing well!

Last week I started getting up about 30 minutes before usual to do the treadmill. Tuesday, Wednesday, and Friday I did a mile each day in 20 minutes. On Thursday I actually did 2 miles in 40 minutes (no idea why i woke up even earlier!).
I took the weekend off from the treadmill but on Saturday I actually walked 2 miles around Fred Meijer Gardens (GPSs are really cool :) ).
Monday morning I really didn't wanna but when I woke up I headed downstairs and put in my 20 minutes for a mile. However, Monday at work I tweaked my lower back so bad I could barely walk. Tuesday was absolute hell (pain no matter if I moved or not), Wednesday was better, Thursday was the same as Wednesday, and today it actually hurts a bit more (but I blame that on the cold weather).
I will attempt to get back on the treadmill this coming Monday but my back will have to let me know that it's okay. It's so frustrating. I was finally getting into the swing of things, getting the routine down, and then back... grr.
Great job Becca, keep it up. It sucks to get up, but the morning is acutally the best time for cardio. You will see more loss from a morning cardio workout then a evening one, seriuosly.

I've read it's better to do a workout before you eat. That way you are burning what's already there instead of just what's in your stomach.
Really? Why is that?Truthfully Pete, I dont know the answer. I have read it and heard it stated numerous times, and in my own experiances it really is true. I believe it has to do with the metabolism running faster then.
Back to the top with this. I am getting ready to break into the 250's for the first time in so long I honestly can't pinpoint a time frame.
I got to order new work pants last week, 2 inches smaller in the waist. My girls at work wouldnt quit picking on me because it looked like I was wearing a tent in my old pants.
And finally, props to The Dude for doing a full hour of cardio last night, even though I know his smoking ass hated it. :) We did 13.5 miles in 45 minutes on the bike, and then hopped on the Eliptical for 15 mintues and 2 more miles. It was tough for me to finish that full hour, and I do cardio every day. So I know The Dude was hurting, but he dug in and got it done.
Anyone else sticking with it this year? Summer is coming fast, and I am going to look better then I ever have standing at the helm of Bad Karma :pimp:
Glad to hear things are going well for you Q!
Nothing happening here yet...or still. I shouldn't say that, nothing organized is happening here. I think we are doing a bit more activity daily. For instance yesterday we took 5 kids (from ages 3 to 13) to a bounce land place (jungle joe's)...if that isn't a workout I don't know what is.lol (I'd suggest going even without kids, it was a lot of fun)

I started a low carb diet on Monday morning. I've been walking at least 2 miles every day and i've already lost 6 pounds. My goal is to lose 20 then stop the diet for a month then go back on and lose another 10.
My start weight was 284. This morning i weighed in at 278. My goal is 250-260 which is where i feel comfortable at in my 6'3" frame. If all goes well i'll be on and off of it all summer in hopes to get down around 225-230.
Wish me luck! :)

I have been true to the treadmill for 4 mornings a week. I bumped it up to 30 minutes instead of 20 so that means 1.5 miles. Every now and then I make it 40 if the show I'm watching is really good :).
However, I didn't do the treadmill at all this week. My one ankle was getting pretty sore and I didn't want to satrt off my vacation that way. We are going to be walking/hiking all over the place this coming week!

Very cool.
Personally I have been doing 5 days a week after work at the gym. Rotating every other day with weights. So I will go in and do 45 mintues on the bike, or 25 mintues on the eliptical, then do a full 6 station work out with wieghts, 4 reps of 12. One the opposite days I do both the bike and the eliptical back to back.

Ran the 5k river bank run today. Time 24:15 averaged 7:49 min/mile
In 2006 I ran 31:27 at a 10:09 min/mile pace.
Nice, I thought about running that but was afraid to do it. I dont jog at all, but I think I can do a 5k without an issue.
Well, I hurt my back almost 3 weeks ago, and havent been able to do anything at the gym at all in that amount of time. I thought for sure I would start to gain it back. So I tried to stick to my eating plan, and I admit I have cheated a few times.
Doesnt seem to matter. Lost 6 pounds in those three weeks so far. 251 clothed and with keys and phone in my pocket as of today. :woot:

I'm down to 268 this morning. I haven't really been strict with my diet, just watching carbs and sugar and i'm still losing 2-3 pounds a week. :)
Congrats to the rest of you with your progress!!
Well, after a summer of doing decent, but by no means sticking to it 100%, I can honestly say I maintained what I did in the other months. I am still down 37 pounds, I am still eating right, and I am starting back to the gym after about a month off. I changed gyms, now I have one that is 24 hours a day, and I started getting up at 5:00am to do my workout in the morning. Only done that for two days now, and mornings are a bitch. But I am forcing myself to do it for at least a week to see if I can do it or not. I think it will take getting use to, but it will work well in the end. With school starting back up, this allows me to be home after work with the kids instead of at the gym.
So anyone else stay true to their plan, or planning on getting back on the horse now that summer is winding down?

I'm @ 260 today.. not being strict with my diet, just watching myself. As for exercise i've been walking the dog 2-3 miles a day so i'm happy with the progress so far. Another 10lbs. and i'll be content for a while. :)
I figure it took a year to get almost 40 pounds and do it right so not to get it back. I am going to shoot for the same goal for next year. Another 40 pounds by the end of next summer. If I can pull that off, then I am within 10 pounds of my ideal weight.
We are in negotations with the gym right now on a contract.lol Hopefully when school starts I will have some time to go again! I have had a couple of weeks this summer that I began working out, but I haven't been able to be consistent. I assume that since Mike will be gone several nights a week I will be eating a lot less. (I dont like to cook for just me or at all for that matter.lol)
Congrats Mike and Q! Good luck with ongoing progress!

This thread was buried too far!
Well in light of my inquiring about which gym to join, I have started walking on the treadmill again. I'm not doing much, but more than nothing. I figure if I can commit to this for at least a month I will revisit the gym membership.
With the time change it has worked out nicely so far. I wake up before the alarm clock, throw my stinky outfit on, head downstairs, walk a mile on the treadmill (takes 18minutes and 45seconds at 3.2MPH), then go about my normal routine. Monday I didn't do my walking til after work, but Tuesday-today I did it in the morning. I'm not sure if I will stick to the mile a day for the weekends, or only do this during the week yet.
I have been successfully going to the gym at least 3-4 times a week, doing a couple miles on the eliptical or treadmill and using weights. If I can't get to the gym I am do aerobic videos at the house (and consequencely learning how to be a stripper. darn comcast on demand exercise tv. lmao) I have been trying to watch what I eat and I am SO F***ING frustrated I could scream. It's been a month and I see no change on the scale or in my body. Not sure what else to do really. Ok-now I am bummed:(
I am still on the same basic deal I have been on for over a year now. I have plateau'd at around 30 pounds lost, but I am seeing a great deal of change in muscle tone, espically in my arms and upper stomach.
Unfortunatly, my tire went from a 20 inch truck tire to a 13 inch golf cart tire, but I cant get it to leave anymore. Everything else is coming back slowly, but that wont change right now.
Overall I am happy with what I have done, and continue to do. I feel 1000% better, I can run 3 miles without a second thought, I am stronger than I have ever been in my life that I remember, and I was able to go out and buy a entire new wardrobe because I didnt fit the old one anymore.
I still try to make it to the gym at least 3 times a week, but sometimes that doesnt happen. Like this week I only went twice. And I am still doing it in the morning at 5:30am. I like it that way, I feel great all thru the day when I do that, and I leave the Gym fresh, clean and showered ready for another day of the good fight.
With winter coming up again, we should do a biggest loser competition on the site. Could be fun.

I was in the United Arab Emirates for 4 months in late 06 early 07. When i got there i quickly discovered that all my normal fast food and grease pit restaurants where not available, so a month into it I started a plan to do something exercise related everyday and eat right. No pop, fries or anything that would not "fuel" my body. I started out at 205 lbs (5' 10") running for about 20 mins at 5.5 mph before I could not go any farther. after about a month of running 5 times a week I was up to 40 minutes at 6mph and then 20 minutes on the bike cooling down. At the start of month 3 I mixed in a hardcore ab workout and upper body weights twice a week while still running. By the time I left I was running 5 miles in 38.5 minutes, then biking 25 minutes. I lost 45 lbs down to 160 and 4 inches off my waist. I could bench 155lbs all day and had a toned upper body. When i returned no one recognized me and I felt absolutely great. The compliments where the best part, it makes your sacrifice so worth it. I am a firm believer in a healthy lifestyle, DO IT!

What do you do to not be hungry in the morning?
Whether I eat breakfast (bowl of cereal, cereal bar, quaker bar, or this morning a pomegranate) I am hungry before lunch. I guess the simple answer is to just use will power and not dip into my lower desk lower for a handful of crackers, chips, or whatever else I can find. But, I am wondering if anyone has found a more satisfying answer.
I am a fan of Rockstar. If I drink one (throughout the morning) then I find I'm not hungry til lunch and sometimes not even then. Most recently I have drank some Monsters with the same effect. If this truly healthy though? There has to be a better alternative then dumping all that caffeine in. Or, is it the caffeine that is curbing my compulsion to stuff my face?
I should also mention that I am not a fan of milk or liquid milk products. I have lactose issues and I just don't like the taste. I think I would prefer something to drink though because it would last longer than a simple snack to get me by.
I eat ever three hours, so its not a big deal for me. If I eat at 7, then I eat at 10 again. I dont eat till AFTER my workout, and then I have a protien shake. you should get a good dose of protien within 30 minutes of any workout so your body has a lean source to replace the calories you burned.
Other than that, I drink 32 oz of water before 7am each day, and I nurse another 32 oz during the day.
Try yogurt, or cottage cheese, or combine them together. I know, it sounds weird, but it is good. Dairy products help make you feel full, so you need to try even if you dont like milk. Also, look into Soy milk, it is better for you, still fills you up, doesnt give you lactose issues, and is GREAT on cereal or in a protein shake.
And just so you know, that Rockstar you drink TOTALLY kills any gains you made on the treadmill. Rockstar is far and away the WORST energy drink you can get. Want to jump start your metabolism with caffine, which does work, then use coffee or tea. Espically Green Tea, loaded with good stuff for you. And it wont give you the sugar crash a energy drink will. But Caffine is a known appetite supressant and metabolism increaser. I have at least one cup of coffee a day just to get me going.
Something else that is good to do is take 4 oz of cubed cheese and a apple. That will make you feel full longer, and it is really good for you. Plus you can get crazy each week with the cheese types. I try a new cheese every week, and it adds some excitement to my diet weekly, which otherwise could get boring.
Becca_007
11-11-2008, 10:40 AM
I don't seem to do the big crash thing or even the big awake thing when drinking them. It's just something, other than water, to drink and as a side effect I am not hungry. With my finicky stomach tea and coffee have never been an option. I know tea is supposed to be healthy but it makes me sick and I don't like the taste... just like milk! I suppose the making me sick part might help to lose weight seeing as both send me to the bathroom. Perhaps the soy milk is something to try. It sounds very scary but the worse that happens is it's horrible and I have to throw it out, right?
I know this. Today my legs are tired. I am sitting in my stinking office chair and I can feel that they have been used. This was day 9 (in a row) on the treadmill. I started off doing 1 mile per day last week, but on Saturday I walked for 2. Sunday I went back down to 1 again because my lower legs were cramping on me, but yesterday and today I did 2 miles. I even had some extra time this morning so I pulled out those old exercise DVDs and went through a 14 minute stretch session. I'm hoping that might help the cramping issue I experienced on Sunday. I am going to try to add in a DVD workout tonight and then again Thursday while still walking the 2 miles each morning.
As far as weight loss for me, there is none. That part is very discouraging. But, I do feel better throughout the day and especially in the morning after my walks. I have also stopped taking my allergy medications. At night I have a tough time breathing but when walking in the morning things seem to clear up. I'm not sure if this is a right thing to do yet, but in an effort to cleanse my body and give it the best chance possible I'm giving it a try.
Edit: I am playing around on FitDay right now. I never checked it out before and it looks pretty cool.
Diet can overcome more in the way of weight loss than exercise. Proven fact.
Change what you eat. Stop drinking soda and you will see at least 10 pounds, seriously. With the Soy milk, get the vanilla or chocolate, not the plain!!!
Also, get some of the bottle water flavor additives. You can get SO MANY NOW, its crazy. Find a few you like, and flavor your water. But stop drinking the energy garbage if you are serious. I love them too, and on my free day, I will enjoy one. But thats it.

I am really liking the www.fitday.com site. It lets me see all the numbers and the weight loss potential actually makes sense when I have it laid out that way. Also, if I want to eat something I have to sit there and type it all in... lol... another deterrent!
FWIW: My lunch yesterday of soup contained half the calories of today's sandwich. Course dinner last night wasn't very healthy, but my calories in were still less than calories out. Yay! As soon as this lunch meat is gone I will be looking for some better lunch alternatives. I can't see throwing it out though so until then I will have to be careful with other meals or up the activity to cancel out these sandwiches.

Mark and I both went to the grocery store today. Shopping, while reading labels, in a full Meijer truly is an experience I wouldn't wish on anyone! We were so hungry and wanted fast after everything was unloaded and put away that lunch today was ravioli... the canned kind. Ouch. However, dinner is going to be steak with stir fry veggies and sometime this afternoon I'll be popping in one of my workout DVDs.
Activities:
As far as progress goes I am currently doing 2.5 miles on the treadmill in the mornings. I started 2 weeks ago at 1 mile each morning, last week I moved up to 2 miles in the morning, and now I have upped the pace and use the last .5 (after the 2 mile workout) as a cool down. I have not been great about adding a DVD workout in the afternoon but did manage to do it twice last week. This week I want to get in 3 or maybe even 4.
Food/Nutrition:
For the past week I have been counting and logging everything that passes my lips. I also picked up a women's one-a-day vitamin today to help fill in some gaps. It's amazing how much sodium we consume and I can only be grateful that I am counting calories and not sodium. Whew. Dinner last night was a small Wendy's chili with a small Wendy's Frosty. I would have scoffed at that amount of food before, but it was actually filling. I also picked up some Soy Milk. I only popped the top to smell it but licked the cap and I don't think it's going to be too bad. Thanks for that suggestion Q.
Weight:
I am far too embarrassed to state what my weight actually is, but if you use the number I was 2 weeks ago and compare to today I am down 5 lbs. Last weekend we went out to dinner with my parents and gorged so if you use that number to today (the time period I have actually made an effort to watch what I consume) I'm down 7 lbs. I'd guess the 5lbs over 2 weeks to be the more realistic number though. I know the scale is evil and I told myself I would concentrate on how I felt throughout the day and how much further I could go in activities, but man, it sure is nice to see results in numbers too.
Sorry if you're sick of hearing about these little battles and all. But, I am excited and want to share! Here is the short version...
Activities: I've been using the treadmill for 2 weeks
Food: I've been tracking my calories for 1 week
Weight: I've lost 5lbs in 2 weeks but all that loss came in the 2nd week and was actually 7lbs
Becca that is wonderful progress! You are making an effort and it is paying off!!
I was so frustrated with my lack of progress regardless of my efforts. In the past I would just smoke more, eat less and the weight was gone. Since I don't smoke any longer, I keep trying other things but nothing was working (i didn't feel or look better and the weight was the same) I started using that fitday.com and I really like that. I don't like being limited in what I eat, I get frustrated if I am told I CANT have something, so with this-I just save up to eat what I want in smaller quantities. I was hoping that with mike gone this week I would be able to kickstart my own diet and hopefully when he gets back we can start eating better together. So far so good. I am working out, eating less and dont feel bad-the scale is showing progress too-finally!!! I can only hope it continues!!!
Kick ass Becca, sounds like you're giving it a serious try. Good for you
Soon you will be picking out organics like I do.
I got 3 days at the gym last week, the damn lock was broken on one morning or it would have been four days.
Going to try for a full 5 this week if i can make it happen, and I am cycling off of my Creatin in about a week, so I should start to see the weight loss again, and hopefully see more definition again as I come down. Its my hope to get under 250 for the first time in MANY years. And my ultimate goal is 230-240 by summer. That will be about 35 pounds a year over two years with sculpting of muscle groups the entire time. I want to look good on my boat next year.

Well the scale has not been as kind over the weekend as I'd like. I have been true to my food intake and exercising regularly so it's a little disappointing. However, while exercising I find that I can go farther and faster so I know I am still getting ahead (even if the scale is evil!).
Started walking on the treadmill 11/03/08. Modified diet and started counting calorie intake 11/10/08.
Total weight loss: 6.5lbs
Total Treadmill Miles: 44.5
On Sunday we cashed in our free week memberships at the YMCA and hit the weight machines. So, I'm now starting to work on strength. This could also be a reason the scale isn't too kind as muscle weighs more than fat. At least that's what I hope!

Tired of these updates yet? I'm only making one a maximum of one a week now!
In the month of November:
60miles on the treadmill
9lbs less on me
I really want to join a gym and as mentioned previously I think the YMCA will be where we go. I just can't beat the price, what they have to offer, and the multiple locations (2 are about 30 minutes from the house and one is about 15 minutes away). We might wait until January to actually join though.
On another note... does anyone have any workout DVDs they would like to swap? I have two that I do regularly and I like that they are made for beginners to start off as well as grow into. I probably like "Slim in 6 with Debbie Sieber's" best but "Biggest Loser" is pretty good too. Maybe this week I will take a look at the next level in them both. But, I'm ready for some variety too so let me know if you're interested in trading.

Becca, we have comcast for our cable provider, and in their on demand section there is an entire fitness selection and the shows are free. Everything from low impact to pole dancing.
Not sure who/what you have for television, but you might be able to find something similar
Becca, do you get Exercise TV? With our cable, we get free ondemand channels and that is where I go when I want to work out at home. There are a ton of choices...even silly dance ones.lol (random learn to be a stripper workouts)
Never got into the workout tapes, but I might have a few good ones I downloaded. I will look to see if I didnt delete them already.
As for the gym, it really doesnt matter where you go, the thing is you HAVE to make yourself go.
Today was the first day back for me in over a week. Holiday and company screwed me up. But I am holding myself to the hard line now till spring. 3 times a week Minimum, cardio and weights all three days, and any other days I feel like going are good. Strict diet again, only eating what and when I am suppose to. Lets see if I cant do it agian this winter.

We get broadcast tv. ABC, NBC, Fox... CBS is far too fuzzy to watch or listen to... grr. For us, a tv that did digital signal was a huge upgrade :). I'm not completely bored with the few DVDs we have yet. I was more interested in other options and which ones you guys like I guess.
With the treadmill at home doing cardio daily is pretty easy. Mark might be looking at getting a bike too. I saw all the ads for ellipticals and just laughed... I have tried but that machine just hates me! The weight machines are what I am really after, and having other cardio choices might be nice too. Plus, classes and the pool will be a good bonus.
Ellipticals are awesome, but they are evil at the same time. 30 minutes on one of them kicks you in the butt for sure.
This morning I used one, in 30 minutes I went 3.5 miles, and almost 500 calories. Alot better then a bike will give you.

I don't know if I'm doing it wrong, or the machine isn't properly set up. They just simply hurt. And not the hurt that comes from the jam it sends to my knees when I get off rhythm, but even when I hang on for dear life and move my legs only. It's like I'm in a permanent squat (legs burn) but it hurts my back too. I've tried it twice now but failed. I love the idea of low impact on my knees but the elliptical is harder on my body than the treadmill and I can't stay on one for 5 minutes. I'd be surprised if I even made it two minutes! I haven't completely given up on them yet, but I don't know how to make it tolerable.

Lean forward, your back hurts because you are trying to compensate for the machine. Just lean into the machine and you will see a difference.
I love the ellipticals as well, but you do have to find your rhythm.lol

Never weigh in until after Q! Lol.
The scale finally moved down for me today so I'm headed into the weekend a little bit happier. Especially since I had a piece of cake last night. Wonder what it would have been had I skipped that... but, I still kept my food calories lower than my activity calories so having the cake wasn't too horrible of me.
I have put 30miles on the treadmill this month and dropped another 3.5lbs. Total loss is now 12.5lbs. We'll see how this weekend goes though because I tend to get down to a number then bounce back up before moving past it.
12.5 is awesome Bec, seriously. That is kicking its ass. And you will find the more you lose, the more you will try.
now go get a 12.5 pound weight and carry it with you in a backpack all day long. Tell me you dont feel better!

I plateau'd a bit this week at 206. Still 5.5lbs down in 11 days.
But I haven't been to the gym in two days, I will NOT miss a third so I am going in tonight at some point. Work and life just got in the way this week.
Also, started an ECA stack today. LOVING the energy and mental focus I get from it. Supposed to be highly thermogenic too. We'll see.
I use various supplements too. Mostly amino acids, and pure grade caffine. Seriously, a shot of that in anything and your good to go.
Timberwolf

yep. ECA uses pharmaceutical grade caffeine. 25mg ephedrine, 200mg caffeine and 200mg aspirin.

For the record, even after eating some curly fries and a chicken/bacon sammich at arby's for lunch, I am still down 2lbs since this morning. New weigh in: 204. that's 7.5 pounds since dec 1st :)
When I break below 200 I'm taking a picture of the scale lol

whats an ECA
Timberwolf

whats an ECA
Ephedrine, Caffeine and Aspirin.
The effects of the ECA stack in weight loss are primarily due to the ephedrine component. Ephedrine acts both as a beta agonist and stimulates the release of norepinephrine. Increased circulating norepinephrine in the body then acts on white adipose tissue by increasing cAMP levels. This causes a thermogenic effect, raising body temperature and increasing the user's metabolism in conjunction with the rest of the stack.
However, the body's negative feedback system then activates to normalize the metabolism. This is done via the production of phosphodiesterase inside the cells, and prostaglandins outside the cell, which both lower cAMP levels within the cell.
Caffeine inhibits the production of phosphodiesterase inside the cell and therefore slows cAMP breakdown. It also binds with and competitively inhibits adenosine receptors in the brain, triggering the release of epinephrine and increasing cAMP levels further.
Aspirin inhibits prostaglandin production outside of the cells, which, in conjunction with caffeine, greatly prolongs the thermogenic effects and increased metabolism by sustaining elevated cAMP levels.
Ephedrine also has an anorectic, or appetite-suppressing, effect. However, these effects only last for about two weeks if the stack is not cycled, as the body becomes tolerant to ephedrine to some degree. It is estimated that 60%–75% of the weight loss from using the ECA stack comes from the anorectic effect, and the remainder from thermogenesis.
The final component in weight loss of the ECA stack is that of a simple stimulant; the higher epinephrine and norepinephrine levels result in increased aerobic exercise performance and less fatigue

The only things I've been taking are a one-a-day women's vitamin to help with nutrition and a couple of antacid per day to help boost my calcium. Being active in the mornings (treadmill) has been enough to up my energy level. Or, maybe it's that I'm not carrying around as much weight! Either way, I just feel better throughout the day after getting that cardio in.

Either way, I just feel better throughout the day after getting that cardio in.
Until I started this diet I was taking up to 3 150mg Zantacs a day. I was getting terrible heartburn from the bad eating habits and all the carbonated drinks.
I started wondering if that much antacid was neutralizing too much stomach acid though and actually causing digestive problems. I think my body just wasn't able to full digest what I was putting in it and I was getting a nasty bloated and miserable feeling quite often.
Since I started eating better, I have maybe taken 3 or 4 total in nearly two weeks.
Is there that much calcium in antacid Becca? Do you need it for heartburn/indigestion issues or just for the calcium? If it works for you, great, but I think if it were me I'd adjust my diet to include some more calcium rich foods or a supplement that can provide it without the digestion inhibiting effect.
But that's my personal situation :)

There is 43% of the recommended daily value in 2 of the Meijer brand antacid tablets. I used to take them for indigestion (I don't know how much they really helped but I took em anyway) during the day but now I just take them for the calcium. As a bonus, they are kind of like candy.. minty but 0 calories. Right now I only have 'em in my desk at work and I take 'em after lunch but I should pick up some for the house too.
I've always had serious stomach troubles. I would take at least 2 Pepcid Completes per week. Since eating better and exercising I think I have taken 2 in the past 2 months. A great thing, because those damn tablets are expensive!

I'm glad that I am doing it naturally because I would be afraid of what would happen if I were to stop taking something. I will say that I have thought about and even looked into many weight loss supplements. I am so sick of hearing the ultra weight loss commercials. I sit and wonder if it might give me a boost. The other thing that keeps me away from them are costs.
I worry about taking diet supplements too. I did the slimquick stuff and my emotional highs and lows were off the charts. I have issues being emotional anyway, so I like to think I am in control of it. So, I quit that stuff...on the 1/2 dose of the eca stack I feel normal, so that is good:)

I know there were a couple of times, after drinking a Rockstar or Monster, that I would just feel wired. Like an adrenaline rush where my heart would beat fast, my hands would shake, and I felt like puking. I have to believe it's the caffeine in that instance but I figure my body has to work hard enough without me introducing something else new into the equation!

Sweet. 4.2 is my current limit and I stay there for 30 minutes. Anything over 3.8 and it's a jog for me. Next week I might try for 4.4. Ooh. Think it was Q who told me the calorie portion of treadmills is typically wrong. Try plugging the same info into fitday and the calories look a lot different :(. Not sure if that applies to other equipment or not.
You guys are really dropping a lot of weight.

yeah if I put the same time into fitday it gives a lot higher calorie count. I usually have to put a lesser time in there in order to get the calories to come out the same. The machines I use allow for weight and age. If it's on or not isn't a big deal. I have kinda got my diet and exercise routine figured out now so I don't pay quite as much detail to the numbers. Just kinda neat from a progress standpoint. My first days were around 225 calories in 30 minutes lol
BTW, I love post workout weigh ins... puts me at 202.5 today... but I am not counting that unless it's still there in the morning at my usual weigh in time, which is typically after I get up and make water ;)

I have not been around much this summer cause of my back but I am pretty much good to go now. I was about 230 a couple weeks ago and I am around 223 now. I do protein shakes but not much else for working out. I take a multi and a B complex for energy in the morning and some other stuff at night to try to raise my good cholesteral.
